Please Be Sure You Have the Latest Graphics Drivers!

If you're experiencing any problems with the game, please verify that you have the latest drivers for your graphics card. Many issues can be solved by downloading the latest drivers from your card's manufacturer. You can get the latest drivers here:

Verifying the Game Files

Sometimes, issues can occur when downloading game updates. This can manifest as not being able to start the game or as odd graphical issues, such as garbled textures, pixelated overlays, or missing character models or visual effects. If you're experiencing anything like this, try verifying your installation through the game's launcher to replace missing or corrupted files:

On Steam:

  • Right-click on Hades II in your Steam Library

  • Select 'Properties...', then select the 'Installed Files' tab

  • Select 'Verify integrity of game files'

On Epic Games Store:

  • Locate Hades II in your Library

  • Click the three-dots symbol near the game title, and select 'Verify'

You may also try uninstalling, manually deleting any leftover files, and re-installing the game completely. You may need to restart your system for changes to take effect.

If You're Having Issues Launching the Game, or See a Black Screen

(Steam Deck users, please see further below.) Please try the following solutions, whichever ones are relevant to your system, in this order:

  1. If you're using an overlay from Steam, GeForce, etc., please try disabling it. To do this for Steam:

    • Right-click on Hades II in your Steam Library

    • Select 'Properties...'

    • Toggle 'Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game'

  2. If you ran the game and it worked for you before, try backing up and then deleting your settings file: %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\Hades II\GlobalSettingsWin.sjson (Windows) ~/Library/Application Support/Supergiant Games/Hades II/GlobalSettingsmacOS.sjson (macOS) Note: This is not your save progress. This will simply make the game restore its default settings.

  3. Try running Steam in Admin mode: exit Steam if it's already running, locate the Steam EXE file, right-click on it, and select "Run as Administrator..."

  4. Try downloading and installing the latest Visual C++ redistributable, as there's a chance it hasn't been installed correctly: https://aka.ms/vs/17/release/vc_redist.x64.exe

  5. Disconnect any nonessential USB or Bluetooth devices plugged into your PC.

If You're Having Issues Launching the Game on Steam Deck

First, ensure your Steam Deck is fully up-to-date. You can verify this as follows:

  • Press the Steam button and navigate to Settings > System

  • Under Beta Participation, ensure your System Update Channel is set to Stable

  • Select Check For Updates

If the game does not launch, we recommend forcing Hades II to run under a designated Proton version:

  • Locate and highlight Hades II in your Library

  • Press the Menu button (with the three lines) and navigate to Properties > Compatibility

  • Check 'Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool'

  • Select Proton 9.0-4 (or the latest that comes with the Steam client)

If this does not work either, try the following:

  • Navigate to Properties > Compatibility as above

  • In the 'General' menu, look for the field with the heading 'LAUNCH OPTIONS'

  • Enter the following: VKD3D_FEATURE_LEVEL=12_2 %command%

If the game still does not launch with a specific Proton version forced, you may need to verify your Proton installation:

  • For Steam Deck users, switch to Desktop mode

  • Open Steam > Library and check the Tools checkbox in the dropdown

  • Find your Proton installation and right-click > Properties > Installed Files > Verify. (You may have multiple versions of Proton installed, so be sure to verify the one matching the version number you selected for Hades II.)

If the Game Won't Start or Read/Write Save Data

Antivirus software is the most common cause of such issues, especially if you see error messages such as "Warning: Unable to Save" or "Warning: Unable to Read Data". To resolve this, in your antivirus software please whitelist the game and save game folder (%USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\Hades II on Windows or ~/Library/Application Support/Supergiant Games/Hades II on Mac), or disable your antivirus software completely.

If using Windows, please also check whether security permissions are set correctly for your save game folder. Right-click the folder, select Properties. On the Security tab, ensure your user account has Full control or Modify permissions.

For Hitching / Freezing / Lag / Frame Rate / Performance Issues

  1. Ensure you have the latest graphics drivers (instructions above).

  2. If you're experiencing lag when moving with a controller, follow these instructions to disable the Microsoft GameInput service: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/5569976/fps-drop-and-stutters-when-using-controller-but-no

  3. Close all other running programs on your PC.

  4. In-game, under Options > Display, change Graphics Quality to "Low".

  5. In-game, under Options > Display, try toggling Fullscreen and/or VSync.

  6. If you have multiple graphics devices, under Options > Display, try changing "Auto" to manually select a different device.

  7. In-game, under Options > Interface, try toggling off Transmit Data.

  8. Disable any overlays, e.g. Steam, GeForce, etc. (instructions above)

  9. If you have Nvidia G-Sync or AMD FreeSync, please disable them. If available, turn on AMD Anti-Lag.

  10. If available, in your graphics device control panel, set 'Maximum Performance Priority' and/or 'Fast VSync'

Mouse and Controller Input Issues

If your controller is not recognized or stops working mid-session, please try the following:

  • Restart the game with the controller connected.

  • Toggle the Steam Input setting to the opposite of what it is set to (enabled or disabled). To do this, right-click Hades II in Steam and select Properties > Controller. Then under Override for Hades II, select the corresponding option in the dropdown menu.

  • Ensure that there is only one controller connected to the PC (wireless or wired).

  • Disconnect all controllers and remove all controller devices from the Device Manager. Then, reconnect your primary controller and try again.

  • For issues specific to Bluetooth controllers, try turning off Vibration under Options > Accessibility.

If you experience any input lag, try toggling VSync in-game, under Options > Display.

If your mouse cursor appears too small, such as while playing at 4K or ultrawide resolutions, you may adjust your pointer size under Mouse Settings in Windows or Accessibility Settings on macOS. (The Hades II mouse cursor is based on your system setting.)

If you experience any other issues with mouse input, such as the cursor moving slower than you expect, go to Options > Interface and toggle Mouse Lock.

Disable any overlays, e.g. Steam, GeForce, etc.

Input Lag Issues With Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2

If you experience noticeable input delay or slow response times controlling the game on Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2, please try the following:

  • Check that your controllers are not low on battery charge.

  • If you are playing in TV mode, some displays have settings that alleviate the input delay. Check your display settings for features such as 'Game Mode,' 'Game Optimizer,' or 'Input Latency', and enable those. Also, look out for advanced settings specific to input delay or latency and try different settings (e.g. 'boost').

  • The Nintendo Switch 2 has a setting that changes TVs to low-latency mode (game mode) when supported. On the Nintendo Switch 2 Home menu, go to System Settings > Display > Auto Low-Latency Mode (ALLM), and enable it.

  • Hades II for Nintendo Switch 2 supports 120fps in TV Mode on compatible displays, and higher frame rate output will feel more responsive. In the console's Home menu, go to System Settings > Display, and enable the 120 Hz Output option. On some displays, you may also need to manually set the TV Resolution setting to 1080p or 1440p.

  • Also try lowering the in-game Dead Zone setting under Options > Gameplay, which can help with movement.

Audio Issues

If you are experiencing issues with the game audio, please first make sure your audio drivers are updated:

  • Open Windows Device Manager

  • Open the Audio Inputs and Outputs list of devices

  • Right-click on your audio device and choose 'Update Driver'

If you are using a controller, make sure it is disabled as a sound device.

On macOS, some audio issues may alleviated by disabling Game Mode, which is on by default while playing in full-screen mode. To disable Game Mode, select the game controller icon in the menu bar, then select Turn Game Mode Off.

If You Unexpectedly Lose Saved Progress

If something happens and you lose progress or find your save data missing, chances are it can still be recovered. Please follow these steps while the game is running and the main menu is up:

  • On Windows, navigate to %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\Hades II\ On macOS, navigate to ~/Library/Application Support/Supergiant Games/Hades II/

  • Sort by 'Date modified' to locate your most recent save matching one of these names, assuming you use Save Slot 1: Profile1_Temp.sav, Profile1_Temp.sav.bak, or Profile1.sav.bak1

  • Rename that file to Profile1.sav

  • Open the in-game Play menu and look for the save

If the Game Crashes During Play

For most crashes, a detailed report is sent to us automatically if the 'Transmit Data' setting is enabled. We will investigate the issue and no further action is required on your part.

If you continue to experience frequent crashes:

  1. Ensure you have the latest graphics drivers (instructions above).

  2. Disable any overlays, e.g. Steam, GeForce, etc. (instructions above)

  3. Uninstall the game and manually delete any leftover files before re-installing.

  4. Use the tool at this link to completely remove your graphics drivers and perform a fresh install.
