Sometimes, issues can occur when downloading game updates. This can manifest as not being able to start the game, as hitches or lag, or as odd graphical issues such as garbled textures, pixelated overlays, invisible character models, or missing visual effects. If you're experiencing anything like this, please try verifying your installation through the game's launcher to replace missing or corrupted files.
On Steam:
Right-click Hades II in your Steam Library
Select 'Properties...', then select the 'Installed Files' tab
Select 'Verify integrity of game files'
On Epic Games Store:
Locate Hades II in your Library
Click the three-dots symbol near the game title, and select 'Manage'
In the menu that pops up, click 'Verify'
You may also try uninstalling, manually deleting any leftover files, and re-installing the game completely. You may need to restart your system for changes to take effect.
Please try the following solutions, whichever ones are relevant to your system, in this order:
If you're using an overlay from Steam, GeForce, etc., please try disabling it. To do this for Steam:
Right-click on Hades II in your Steam Library
Select 'Properties...'
Toggle 'Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game'
If you ran the game and it worked for you before, try backing up and then deleting your settings file (your save progress will not be affected):
%USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\Hades II\GlobalSettingsWin.sjson (Windows)
~/Library/Application Support/Supergiant Games/Hades II/GlobalSettingsmacOS.sjson (macOS)
Try running Steam in Admin mode. Exit Steam if it's already running, locate the Steam .EXE file, right-click on it, and select 'Run as Administrator...'
Try downloading and installing the latest Visual C++ redistributable, as there's a chance it hasn't been installed correctly.
Disconnect any nonessential USB or Bluetooth devices plugged into your PC.
Antivirus software is the most common cause of such issues, especially if you see error messages such as 'Warning: Unable to Save' or 'Warning: Unable to Read Data'. To resolve this, in your antivirus software please whitelist the game and save game folder (%USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\Hades II on Windows or ~/Library/Application Support/Supergiant Games/Hades II on Mac), or disable your antivirus software completely.
If using Windows, please also check whether security permissions are set correctly for your save game folder:
Right-click your save game folder, then select 'Properties'
On the Security tab, ensure your user account has 'Full control' or 'Modify' permissions.
If you're experiencing issues with the game's performance such as a choppy frame rate or screen tearing, please try the following:
Ensure you have the latest graphics drivers, and that you've verified your installation (instructions above).
If you're experiencing lag when moving with a controller, follow these instructions to disable the Microsoft GameInput service.
Close other programs running on your PC.
In-game, under Options > Display, try changing 'Graphics Quality' to "Low".
In-game, under Options > Display, try toggling 'Fullscreen' and/or 'VSync'.
If you have multiple graphics devices, under Options > Display, try changing the 'Graphics Device' setting from "Auto" to manually select a different device.
In-game, under Options > Interface, try toggling off 'Transmit Data'.
Disable any overlays, e.g. Steam, GeForce, etc. (instructions above)
If you have Nvidia G-Sync or AMD FreeSync, please disable them. If available, turn on AMD Anti-Lag.
If available, in your graphics device control panel, set 'Maximum Performance Priority' and/or 'Fast VSync'
If your controller is not recognized or stops working mid-session, please try the following:
Restart the game with the controller connected.
Toggle the Steam Input setting to the opposite of what it is set to (enabled or disabled). To do this, right-click Hades II in Steam and select Properties > Controller. Then under 'Override for Hades II', select the corresponding option in the dropdown menu.
Ensure that there is only one controller connected to the PC (wireless or wired).
Disconnect all controllers and remove all controller devices from the Device Manager. Then, reconnect your primary controller and try again.
For issues specific to Bluetooth controllers, while the game is running go to Options > Accessibility, and try toggling off 'Vibration'.
If you're experiencing any input lag, while the game is running go to Options > Display, and try toggling 'VSync'.
If your mouse cursor appears too small, such as while playing at 4K or ultrawide resolutions, you may adjust your pointer size under Mouse Settings in Windows or Accessibility Settings on macOS. (The Hades II mouse cursor is based on your system setting.)
If you're experiencing any other issues with mouse input, such as the cursor moving slower than you expect, while the game is running go to Options > Interface, and try toggling 'Mouse Lock'.
Please also try disabling any overlays, such as Steam, GeForce, etc.
If you're experiencing issues with the game audio, please make sure your audio drivers are updated:
Open Windows Device Manager
Open the Audio Inputs and Outputs list of devices
Right-click on your audio device and choose 'Update Driver'
If you're using a controller, make sure it is disabled as a sound device.
On macOS, some audio issues may be alleviated by disabling Game Mode, which is on by default while playing in full-screen mode. To disable Game Mode, select the game controller icon in the menu bar, then select 'Turn Game Mode Off'.
If something happens and you lose progress or find your save data missing, chances are it can still be recovered. Please follow these steps while the game is running and the main menu is up:
On Windows, navigate to %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\Hades II\
On macOS, navigate to ~/Library/Application Support/Supergiant Games/Hades II/
Sort by 'Date modified' to locate your most recent save matching one of these names, assuming you use Save Slot 1: Profile1_Temp.sav, Profile1_Temp.sav.bak, or Profile1.sav.bak1
Rename that file to Profile1.sav
Open the in-game Play menu and look for the save
If you're experiencing frequent crashes during play, please try the following:
Ensure you have the latest graphics drivers (instructions above).
Disable any overlays, e.g. Steam, GeForce, etc. (instructions above)
Uninstall the game and manually delete any leftover files before re-installing.
Use the tool at this link to completely remove your graphics drivers and perform a fresh install.
If you experience issues trying to start the game, with graphical corruption or missing textures, or anything of the sort, please try verifying your installation:
Select Hades II in your Steam Library
Select the Settings cog button
Select 'Properties...', then select the 'Installed Files' tab
Select 'Verify integrity of game files'
First, ensure your Steam Deck is fully up-to-date. You can verify this as follows:
Press the Steam button and navigate to Settings > System
Under Beta Participation, ensure your System Update Channel is set to 'Stable'
Select 'Check For Updates'
If the game does not launch, we recommend forcing Hades II to run under a designated Proton version:
Locate and highlight Hades II in your Library
Press the Menu button (with the three lines) and navigate to Properties > Compatibility
Toggle 'Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool'
Select 'Proton 9.0-4' (or the latest that comes with the Steam client)
If this does not work, try the following:
Navigate to Properties > Compatibility as above
In the 'General' menu, look for the field with the heading 'LAUNCH OPTIONS'
Enter the following: VKD3D_FEATURE_LEVEL=12_2 %command%
If the game still does not launch with a specific Proton version forced, you may need to verify your Proton installation:
For Steam Deck users, switch to Desktop mode
Open Steam > Library and check the Tools checkbox in the dropdown
Find your Proton installation and right-click > Properties > Installed Files > Verify.
You may have multiple versions of Proton installed, so be sure to verify the one matching the version number you selected for Hades II.
If you experience issues trying to start the game, with graphical corruption or missing textures, or anything of the sort, please try verifying your installation:
Select My Library > Hades II
Select the '...' button > 'Manage'
Select 'Files' > 'Verify and repair'
If Xbox Achievements fail to unlock after meeting the gameplay requirements, please try fully closing and re-starting Hades II. Achievement unlocks can sometimes be delayed when resuming from the console's Sleep mode with Quick Resume, so refreshing the session can help. If that doesn't work, please try verifying your network settings.
If you experience issues trying to start the game, with graphical corruption or missing textures, or anything of the sort, please try verifying your installation:
Navigate to the Nintendo Switch Home menu
Select 'System Settings' > 'Data Management' > 'Manage Software'
Select Hades II, then 'Scan for Corrupted Data'.
If you experience noticeable input delay or slow response times controlling the game on Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2, please try the following:
Check that your controllers are not low on battery charge.
If you are playing in TV mode, some displays have settings that alleviate input delay. Check your display settings for features such as 'Game Mode,' 'Game Optimizer,' or 'Input Latency', and enable those. Also, look out for advanced settings specific to input delay or latency and try different settings (e.g. 'boost').
The Nintendo Switch 2 has a setting that changes TVs to low-latency mode (game mode) when supported. On the Nintendo Switch 2 Home menu, go to System Settings > Display > Auto Low-Latency Mode (ALLM), and enable it.
Hades II for Nintendo Switch 2 supports 120fps in TV Mode on compatible displays, and higher frame rate output will feel more responsive. In the console's Home menu, go to System Settings > Display, and enable '120 Hz Output'. On some displays, you may also need to manually set the TV Resolution setting to 1080p or 1440p.
Also try lowering the in-game Dead Zone setting under Options > Gameplay, which can help make movement feel more responsive.
Hades II - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition supports 120 Hz at up to 4K resolution (upscaled) when connected to a supported display. To set your preferred display output, open the Nintendo Switch Home menu and go to System Settings > Display, then ensure the 'TV Resolution' and '120 Hz Output' options are set accordingly. You can also verify the settings when selecting 'Dock Output Information' while the game is running.
If you're upgrading from the Nintendo Switch version of Hades II, please make sure to install the Hades II - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack to unlock these features. This is a free upgrade in all regions and is downloadable from the Nintendo eShop.
If your Cross-Save progress is not appearing after connecting your account to PC and Nintendo Switch or Switch 2, please try the following steps to force a sync:
On PC, start a new game in the same slot that your Nintendo Switch save file should be in, then close the game to upload that data to the cloud. Start the game on your Nintendo Switch and open the Play menu. There should now be a cloud conflict on the save slot. Select the slot, then resolve the conflict, being very careful to choose the save data with the most progress.
After resolving the conflict, start playing and enter a new Location to trigger a save, then pause and choose 'Sync & Quit'. The next time you play on PC, your Cross-Save data should be there.
Your save data for Hades II is compatible across Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Your save data can be transferred between platforms by using the device's Local Communication feature or via microSD Express card.
Hades II for PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro supports 120 Hz at up to 4K resolution (upscaled) on supported displays. To verify the video output on your display, go to the PlayStation Settings menu > Screen and Video > Video Output, and ensure that 'Resolution', 'VRR', and '120 Hz Output' are all set to "Automatic". These will default to the highest specs available to your display.
Hades II also supports the 'Power Saver' feature on PS5 and PS5 Pro, which sets the game resolution to 1080p at a locked 60 FPS. Make sure to toggle this setting according to the output you desire under Settings > System > Power Saving > Power Saver for Games.
