Bastion for iPad Now a Universal App, Optimized for iPhone 5!

Posted by Greg Kasavin on November 14, 2012

Today we’re rolling out the 1.1 update to Bastion for iPad, which adds support for the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, and 5th generation iPod touch! As part of this, Bastion is now fully optimized for the iPhone 5′s Retina display — check out the screenshots in this post to get an impression — and we’ve also added iCloud support so your progress can transfer seamlessly from one device to another. (To transfer existing data to iCloud, please update the app and load each save slot you want to sync.)

This is a free update if you already own Bastion for iPad, and new players can get the game on any of these devices for $4.99. Either way, head over to Bastion’s page on the App Store to get the latest version, or read on for more info.

Bastion Optimized for iPhone 5

Bastion for iPad was our first foray into iOS gaming, and the response we got was amazing. The game earned Editors’ Choice on the App Store, very positive reviews from the press, as well as glowing reviews from thousands of players who took the time to rate it.

Then, a couple of months ago on September 12, Apple unveiled the iPhone 5. Now, we’d previously stated in our FAQ for the iPad version that we chose to focus exclusively on iPad both for technical reasons and because we “felt the game experience would not translate well to the iPhone’s smaller screen.” Well, the iPhone 5 added quite a bit of screen real estate, so we decided to take another look. And sure enough, we found that Bastion looked great and ran beautifully on the new device. Of course we still needed to update all the menu screens and re-tune the controls to fit the smaller form factor, not to mention implement iCloud support, so all that took a little while. But it’s finally ready!

Bastion Optimized for iPhone 5

While we were looking into getting the game on iPhone 5, we wanted to see which other iOS devices we could support. We found the game looked and played better than we expected on iPhone 4S, and also worked great on the new 5th generation iPod touch, so we added support for those too.

Bastion also plays great on the recently released iPad mini and 4th generation iPad. The iPad mini’s smaller form factor turns out to be a very comfortable fit if you prefer the Classic Controls setting, and the game runs especially fast and smooth on the 4th gen iPad.

Here is a full list of devices supported by Bastion for iOS after the 1.1 update:
- iPad 2
- iPad 3rd Generation
- iPad 4th Generation
- iPad mini
- iPhone 4S
- iPhone 5
- iPod touch 5th Generation

The game will not run on older devices for technical reasons.

Will progress be synced between the two devices?

  • Greg on 14/11/2012

Yes. You will need to update the version that has saved data, then load that saved data once to sync it to iCloud.

  • Petter on 14/11/2012

Any plans on a Andriod port of Bastion? Regards Petter

  • TheKido on 14/11/2012

On the AppStore i can see : Requirements: Compatible with iPhone 4 Sure will not run on iPhone 4 ???

Game saves don't seem be saving between my iPad and iPhone 5. Is this a know bug?

  • RedRaccoonDog on 14/11/2012

Let me rephrase my comment. The game save data isn't syncing between my iPad and iPhone 5 (via iCloud). I do have an iCloud account and it is set up. I tried opening Bastion on my iPad first, then opening it on the iPhone. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • Greg on 14/11/2012

@RedRacoonDog, look for an email from Chris with some suggestions on how to solve this. For anyone experiencing issues getting iCloud save transfer working as expected, as a first step please make sure you've downloaded the Bastion 1.1 update on your iPad and subsequently loaded the saved data you want to sync to iCloud (while connected to the Internet). If that doesn't work or if you run into any other issues, please feel free to contact us.

  • dodol on 14/11/2012

i could not find this game in singapore app store. could you publish the game there? Thanks :)

  • Jake on 14/11/2012

Is there any chance this could come to 4th gen iPods anytime soon? =P

  • Mangler on 14/11/2012

Just like TheKido, my problem lies with what the Apple Store says what Bastion is compatiable with. "Compatiable with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5," etc, etc. I have an iPhone 4 and was very upset when I went to load up the game and saw the message that the iPhone 4 is not compatiable with this game after all. I'd recommend changing the "Requires" section in the apple store because this game cost $5 and I can't even play it.

  • Po-Shiun Huang on 14/11/2012

Please sell this great game in Taiwan APP Store!!!!

  • Greg on 14/11/2012

@Mangler: Unfortunately due to a technical limitation we are unable to update the device list in the Requirements section of the App Store, which is why we tried to state as prominently as possible which devices the game supports at the top of the app description (as well as in this post). I'll follow up by email with how to pursue getting a refund (we cannot refund App Store purchases directly).

  • Bojo on 14/11/2012

Please make this game available on the Philippines app store... Judging from what i'm seeing in the comments, you guys are really missing a lot of sales due to the unavailability of your game in most of the asian appstores... I hope the devs can do something about this...

  • Nathan on 15/11/2012

I know my iPhone 4 doesn't meet the requirements, but is it the CPU or graphics that's not up to par? Or is it both?

  • Greg on 15/11/2012

@Nathan, it's both but mostly the CPU. We tried cutting various graphical features but the game still ran poorly on the 4. We could have cut more content and animations and things but at a certain point the experience would have been heavily diminished and we don't want for people to have to settle for a substandard version of the game.

No love for iPod 4th gens? I know atleast 10 people that would have bought this, myself included, for the 4th ges ipod touch :c please consider. Seriosuly the lack of graphic quality would be made up with the storyline, controls and overall gameplay :c Hopefully you guys consider

  • Elijah Barber on 16/11/2012

Not to mention I bought it immediately without reading due to excitement :P silly me

  • Alessandro on 17/11/2012

I'm about to buy an iPad Mini and that'll be the third time I buy Bastion, on the Mac App Store, on Steam, on soon on the App Store. That's HOW MUCH I love this game :) Supergiant, please make other games. Please Supergiant, take my hard-earned money and give it purpose. I think I'll buy the OST in the meantime...

  • Ash on 17/11/2012

Really hoping for an Android version of the game. :)

  • David on 24/11/2012

I'd seen this game a while ago and regularly considered buy it. Recently I impulse purchased and oh my goodness! This is the sort of game I've been begging for on these mobile devices. It reminds me a lot of some of the best games for SNES before everything went to 3D platforming with awkward controls, but with graphics and sound that take advantage of the newer hardware! I'd love to see what you guys would do with a JRPG, I'm pretty sure you could show Square how to make a good RPG again!

  • Ashallyn on 25/11/2012

Thanks for the iphone support XD loooooooooooove this game
