Bastion: One Year Later

Posted by Greg Kasavin on July 27, 2012

On July 20 last year, Bastion launched on Xbox LIVE Arcade as the first title in the 2011 Summer of Arcade. This past weekend we figured we’d get our whole team together to mark the occasion at the house where Bastion was made, and reflect on the incredible show of support we’ve received from all you Bastion players out there during such an incredible year.

Bastion One-Year Anniversary
@ our Bastion anniversary party, feat. the Supergiants and close friends who helped along the way. Left to right: Atambir Rao, Logan Cunningham, Greg Kasavin, Chris Jurney, Amir Rao, Anna Lee, Gavin Simon, Jen Zee, Andre Mina, Darren Korb, Bret Denslow, Alex Ahad, Michael Ailshie, Ashley Barrett.

These are some of the major things that happened for us in the last 12 months:

- We shipped Bastion on Xbox LIVE Arcade, PC, Google Chrome, Mac, and Linux as part of Humble Indie Bundle V

- We moved from a house in San Jose to a little studio space in San Francisco

- Our game earned more than 100 industry accolades

- Our game sold more than 1.3 million copies, including Humble Bundle sales

- Our team grew from seven to nine people, with Michael and Chris joining

- We’ve been keeping busy supporting Bastion and figuring out what’s next

We never could have expected this kind of success for our first game and love having such a high standard to live up to with whatever we do next — we appreciate your patience in the mean time, and we always look forward to hearing from you via email, Twitter, Facebook, even the occasional hand-written letter, and meeting you in person at places like PAX.

Thank you for a great and memorable year.

One last thing — for Bastion’s one-year anniversary we figured we’d make everything 25% off in our online store for one week. Use the discount code 1YEAR at checkout. We’ve got a new art print by Jen Zee up for grabs in there:

We hope you enjoy it.

Congrats! But obvious question, what’s next?

I used the 25% discount on the sheet music! My price drastically reduced from the ridiculous price of $0.00 to $0.00! A LIFETIME OF SAVINGS.

  • Greg on 27/7/2012

@Dustin, I am pleasantly surprised that using the discount code on a $0 item did not create a world-eating singularity.

Congratulations. Bastion is absolutely amazing and I am glad more games like this are coming out and best of all... People are buying them! Good luck supergiant games (with a tiny studio), keep up the good work and we will throw our money for as long as it is necessary.

I tried writing something, but Xavier's comment above had every word I wanted to say and more, so, you know, good work, y'all.

Just bought the music CD, even though the OST came with Humble Bundle. Bastion was such a beautiful game!

congrats guys! I really love Bastion (as everyone else does) and I hope Supergiant Games will make more and more games that will "spark your imagination like the games you played as a kid" in the future :D

Bastion was a really phenomenal game. The gameplay was a lot of fun, the graphics were beautiful, the music was enchanting, and what really brought it all together and made it stick in my mind was the narration. Logan did a phenomenal job, and I dare say that just hearing the narration reacting to everything that happened may have been my favorite part of the game. I'm looking forward to what's next for the team.

bought the amazing print without seeing that code. no regrets :) I'm just glad to support such a great team :)

Hey guess what guys? All the success, you deserve it.

  • Zack Wartman on 30/7/2012

Happy anniversary you guys! I want you to know that Bastion has been my favorite indie game since it came out last year, and nothing has been able to knock it from that pedestal. It's hard to believe that this was your first game ever, it's just so amazing, and I still to this day can't listen to the soundtrack without getting enveloped in the world. (I also can't leave Zulf to his fate at the end... Call me light-hearted.) Anyway congrats on one year now, you all deserve the best of everything that comes to you!

Bastion is awesome. I can't imagine a way to put it clearer. All of its aspects are amazing and people should be trying to create creative art like that. Congratulations, you guys have motive to be proud for a lifetime.
